For some entities, it will be fairly easy to determine the Primary Category Label, but for others it may require a bit of thinking and researching in order to determine the best Primary Category. Here are the best methods of identifying the Primary Category of an entity:
- Look at the name of the entity and see if the type of business/service/profession/POI is mentioned in the name itself.
- If the name of the entity does not yield any clues, research on the entity’s official website (if available) and look for how the entity refers to itself.
- Look for ‘About Us,’ ‘Products,’ or ‘Services’ pages to help get insight as to what the primary business for the entity might be.
- Additional research on sites (such as Wikipedia) may help determine the Primary Category.
- For some entities, you may need to think about how a majority of users in the market, or globally, perceive the entity.
- Ask yourself the questions, "If I were searching Bing using this category name as my query (e.g. hair salons, Banks & Credit Unions) , would I expect to find this entity as a result? And would the entity’s presence make sense?”
When an entity offers more than one type of services or products, it becomes more challenging to determine the Primary Category. Below are some techniques you should follow to determine the best Primary Category.
- Review the entity name and see how the entity refers to itself as first.
- Ex: MGM Grand Hotel & Casino – The entity in its name references itself as a hotel first and a casino second. Therefore, the Primary Category for this entity is Hotels.
- If the entity name does not help, visit the entity’s official website and look for an ‘About Us’ page. Look to see what the business refers to itself as first, and try to base your Primary Category decision off of that information
- If the entity’s official website does not have an ‘About Us’ page, or it lacks any real information, look to see if they have a ‘Services’ or ‘Products’ pages and use your judgement.
- If the entity’s website does not prove to be useful, or the entity does not have an official website, rely on sites such as Wikipedia or review sites to get insight into how users perceive the entity
- Ex: IKEA – The entity’s Wikipedia page mentions the fact that it’s the largest furniture retailer in the world, meaning that many users visit the entity to purchase furniture so its Primary Category is Furniture Stores
- Think about how a majority of people in the market would perceive the type of business as in which he entity is in.
- Ex: Central Cinema -- This entity is a combination movie theater/restaurant that offers dine-in service while watching films. Most users would probably perceive Central Cinema to be a movie theater first, as it’s not required to order food to watch the film being screened, so the Primary Category is Cinema
- Consider whether the entity is famous for a particular type of service or product? If a majority of users know of the entity because of a particular service, or product that it sells or makes, the Primary Category could be based on that perception.
- Ex: Dunkin' Donuts – This entity offers donuts and coffee, but is world worldwide known for their donuts, so the primary category label is Donuts
- Use your best judgment. Sometimes the answer to the question of what the Primary Category should be for the entity will not be an obvious or clear one, and you may have to use your best judgment. When it comes to using your best judgment, always ask yourself: if you were to assign the entity to a particular Primary Category, would users be happy to see the entity listed as a query search result?
